3 Ways the PPPSW Team Makes Valentine’s Magic Happen Behind-the-Scenes

February 5, 2019

On the surface, Valentine’s Day is all about romance — candlelit dinners, chocolates, stuffed bears and a night with someone special. But wherever there’s romance, there’s a whole lot of complication. It’s the commitment of us all on the PPPSW team to make sure we provide the resources, knowledge, and support to help all of our community members navigate these complications with confidence and ease.

1. Education

As the nation’s largest provider of sex education, Planned Parenthood works every day to help keep people safe and healthy, including providing education and resources on condoms and preventing sexually transmitted infections (STI)s. We know that starting a conversation about safer sex might feel uncomfortable for some, and we’re here to help.

Planned Parenthood works every day to help young people and communities be safe and healthy. Our affiliates provide education and outreach to 1.5 million people each year. Our websites, both in English and Spanish, provide accurate, nonjudgmental information about sexual and reproductive health to more than 73 million visitors annually.

2. Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Testing

It’s not the most glamorous part of sex, but it’s a reality we help people navigate every day. Unprotected sex happens, and we want everyone in our community to have access to testing and treatments.

Planned Parenthood understands that access to safer sex — including tools, testing, and treatment — and education about STIs are the best ways to ensure that people of all ages stay healthy and safe. STI prevention is a core part of Planned Parenthood’s health care services and education efforts. Last year, Planned Parenthood health centers provided more than 4.4 million STI tests and treatments, including more than 700,000 HIV tests.

3. Advocating for Survivors

We participate in many causes and movements throughout the year, with one of the most profound being V-Day.

V-Day is a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls (including cisgender, transgender, and those who hold fluid identities that are subject to gender based violence). V-Day is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. It generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM), and sex slavery.

Through V-Day campaigns, local volunteers and college students produce annual benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues and A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer to raise awareness and funds for anti-violence groups within their own communities. Each year, thousands of V-Day benefit events take place produced by volunteer activists in the U.S. and around the world, educating millions of people about the reality of violence against women and girls.
